SCIENION and the COLODOR consortium collaborate on the development of sensors for the detection of toxic volatile organic compounds in modern cooking equipment.

Quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) is important for a great variety of applications in consumer health and environmental protection. It plays a crucial role in the food industry as frying may cause the release of toxic degradation products.

The COLODOR project – “Integrated-optical detection of volatile organic compounds using functional polymer coatings” – tackles the need for compact VOC detection systems by proposing a new optical multi-parameter gas sensor concept that relies on dye doped polymers. The key objectives are:

• Research on these novel sensing materials and their local deposition on a sensor chip
• Realization of a self-contained photonic gas sensor chip
• Proof of the optical VOC sensing principle and evaluation of the sensor performance.

SCIENION supports the project with its longstanding know-how in non-contact dispensing technologies, the development of polymers, surface optimization and industrial integration of functional materials into miniaturized sensor systems, compatible for mass production.

The involvement of three industrial companies from the fields of photonic devices, local functionalization and kitchen appliances will cover the entire value chain and enable later commercialization. The application-based project objective is the detection of VOCs during hot air cooking as used in modern air fryer cooking equipment. Real-time detection of VOCs will allow optimizing the cooking process to avoid toxic products and at the same time reducing the fat content of the food. Thus, the project will contribute to healthier food preparation and improved consumer well-being.

For SCIENION, the project represents its first steps in direct marketing of consumer products.
